Although many people are still interested in irreplaceable tokens, the industry is prone to many problems. A recent list of Discord servers compromised between May 1 and May 30 points to an urgent problem. All of these services belong to NFT projects, including some high-profile projects.

NFT rifts are a big target

There are many reasons why criminals would try to compromise someone’s Discord server NFT project. First and foremost, these Discords have hundreds, if not thousands of members. Most of these users will have irreplaceable tokens and cryptocurrencies, which will allow the perpetrators to trick them into sharing their private keys or giving up ownership of the property.

Another reason is cheering for other projects that the initial team is reportedly collaborating with. It is common for projects to work together and try to raise each other in the process. However, culprits can easily advertise worthless NFT collections – although most end up close to $ 0 – or stolen art collections.

Unfortunately, there has been a growing interest in compromising NFT Discord servers lately. List shared on Twitter shows 70 incidents in a one-month period. Keep in mind that this is during the bear crypto market, which indicates that the real damage could be much greater when the markets become bullish again. Nevertheless, there are many groups that need to start taking security far more seriously. This includes individual staff members, moderators, etc.

There are many small projects on the list of compromised NFT Discord servers, which is quite normal. Small projects and teams often jeopardize security in order to gain rapid publicity and momentum without a long-term project vision. If you’ve ever bought a random NFT project and joined Discord, you’ll be bombarded with DMs for shitty collections during the day because the initial project team didn’t mind getting those people off the server.

Even big projects are not safe

Unfortunately, there are a lot of attacks on large NFT collections as well. This underscores the need for far better security in the irreplaceable token industry, although it may prove difficult to access. Members of Discords belonging OpenSeaRTFKT, Cool Cats, MoonbirdsBlockworks and Trait Sniper will notice some irregularities during May 2022.

This trend continues in June 2022 as the Bored Ape Yacht Club’s Discord server was also compromised a few days ago. It is unfortunate how things are going these days and how much of a problem basic security measures are, no matter how much money is at stake. All NFT enthusiasts are advised to be careful when talking to people on Discord, regardless of their alleged affiliation to the collection.
