Robots roll around the community | by Ed Lovelock | Starship Technologies | Sep, 2022

Whether it’s kids waving at Starship robots as they roll down the sidewalk, or families dancing to a song when they receive their deliveries, we’re proud to be at the heart of the communities in which we operate.

A day in the life of a starship robot

However, we appreciate that seeing robots is not the ‘norm’ for many people, so we wanted to shed more light on how robots work.

Starship robots are over 99% autonomous, having made over 3.5 million deliveries worldwide. With a suite of cameras and sensors, they move — on sidewalks/pavements — along pre-mapped routes and can detect people and obstacles in their path.

The size of the robots is deliberately small so they don’t take up too much space on pavements, yet they are deceptively spacious and can still deliver up to 3 bags of shopping. Perfect for those top-up stores or to take out with friends!

All robots are equipped with a bright orange, illuminated flag that provides visibility to both pedestrians and drivers, along with front and rear lights for easy detection in the dark. You may also notice the lights flashing to indicate the direction in which to change direction or turn.

And don’t worry, just because robots are autonomous, they don’t take over. Each one is programmed to continue learning about its environment to optimize delivery journeys and driving behavior, but there’s always a human on hand should the robot ever need it.

In these cases, the robot will send an alert back to Starship ‘Mission Control’ (aka our operations team!), and a remote human assistant will assist the robot in its time of need. One person can supervise dozens of robots at the same time, confirming the robots’ decisions and helping if necessary. This is something that is becoming less and less as time goes on – we started with two or three people who had to monitor each individual robot, but now someone can monitor many more robots by themselves.

How do I order?

Starship robots already deliver to over 30 locations in 6 countries and it’s easy to get started!

Our friendly robots love being in the community and look forward to delivering to you soon!
