SEC launches Game-Show campaign to educate investors in a ‘playful way’ – Crypto included – Bitcoin news regulation

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has launched a gaming campaign to help investors make informed decisions “in a playful way”. One of the contestants in the game chose to listen to a celebrity and invest in cryptocurrencies.

SEC debuts ‘Games-related public service campaign’

The SEC’s Office for Education and Advocacy last week unveiled a “game-themed public service campaign”. Entitled “Investomania”, the campaign aims to “help investors make informed investment decisions and avoid fraud”.

The campaign features a 30-second TV spot, interactive quizzes and 15-second informative videos on crypto assets, margin calls and guaranteed returns, the SEC said in detail, elaborating:

The campaign encourages investors to research investments and obtain information from reliable sources to understand the risks before investing.

In the TV spot, the game host asks two contestants to select a square on the board for video games with investment options. These included online rumors, celebrity accolades, tips on stocks from your uncle, cryptocurrencies to the moon, fear of leaks (FOMO), stocks of memes, tulip bulbs, guaranteed returns and time on the market.

One of the 15-second videos was about investing in cryptocurrencies. In the video, the celebrity encourages investors to listen to their advice and buy crypto assets.

The SEC described:

Once the contestants have decided, the video shows, in a fun and comical way, the consequences of a good or bad choice.

“Sometimes investing can look and feel like a game,” the SEC notes. “Our public service campaign ‘Investomania’ uses the concept of gaming to playfully educate investors that investing is not a game and that they need to be informed when making investment decisions.”

The Securities Supervisor concluded:
