Storage of liver transplant surgery patients

Storage of liver transplant surgery patients

In the US, 70% of [donor livers] are not used. I don’t know if we can save that 70%, ”says Clavien. “But it’s exciting to try to save organs that aren’t being used, or those with problems that could be exploited. This liver was absolutely amazing. ”

Once removed from their donor, the liver is usually kept on ice for a maximum of 12 hours to prevent the cells from being damaged by the cold, which would reduce the chances of a successful transplant. This narrow window makes it difficult to align organs with people who need a donor liver, which means many patients die before one can be found.

Although further research is needed, the team believes the new technique could allow donor livers to be safely stored for up to 12 days before transplantation. If it works, it could also increase the likelihood of donor liver treatment with drugs before surgery.

The 62-year-old man had several serious liver diseases, including advanced cirrhosis and severe portal hypertension – an increase in blood pressure in the main blood vessel that carries blood from the intestines and spleen to the liver.

After being transplanted into his body, his liver began to function normally within three days. The patient was taking immunosuppressants to prevent the risk of infection after surgery and was discharged from the hospital 12 days after surgery. An assessment one year after surgery found no signs of liver damage, injury, or rejection.

The demand for liver transplants is growing, and the number of people is growing dies of liver disease, but the number of available organs is still low. There are currently more than 11,000 people in the United States waiting for a liver transplant, according to Department of Health and Social Services, and waiting times vary widely across the country.

“I think we can say that this represents a revolution in the way we treat liver disorders,” Clavien says. “The proof is the patient – that he is here and knows how he was before.”
