If your podcast is going to be truly crime-related then your niche might be crime and mystery fans; if your podcast is related to health and fitness, then your audience might be those interested in healthy living, weight loss, exercise, etc.

So find your podcast’s purpose and niche before moving on to the next steps.

Once you understand the purpose and niche of the podcast, you can now focus on coming up with a unique name for your podcast that will intrigue your audience and describes the podcast.

There are also many free websites and tools that can generate names for you if you need some inspiration. Get ideas from Business Name Generator or Get Welderwhich are excellent resources.

Finally, you’ll need to create a schedule that includes your release schedule, whether it’s weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, as well as what days and times of the week and your podcast format.

This is the part of starting a podcast where you will need to purchase a quality microphone. Bold x Collective recommends that you first research and browse available microphones and editing software before purchasing to help determine which one is best for your budget and needs.

Record your Podcast

Before we get into the tools for recording your podcast, let’s talk about scripting. While it may seem tempting to have a podcast script handy in case you forget any of your points, preparing a script takes a long time.

Of course, depending on the length of your episodes, but unless you plan to have short 5-minute episodes, writing a script for anything longer will accumulate to dozens of pages that are just a waste of time for many.

Moreover, while the ability to read from a script may seem easy and efficient, as many of us know from experience, listening to someone read a script can be extremely boring.

To avoid the increased risk of your voice sounding very monotone, jot down the key ideas and concepts you want to talk about in advance to prioritize your topics, without having to spend hours writing and memorizing a long script.

When it comes to software for recording your podcast, there is no shortage of choices. For starters, there is a very useful tool called Audacity that will allow you to record your podcast/audio and then edit it when you’re done, it does the job and it’s free!

A more expensive alternative is a tool called Adobe Audition. Adobe Audition offers many advanced tools compared to Audacity, but is associated with monthly or annual costs. Another tool Bold x Collective recommends is called Cast.

This tool involves a small fee and allows you to record yourself as well as up to 3 guests (which can come in handy if you expect frequent guests).

Like the other tools mentioned, Cast allows you to edit your content, and when you’re done, you can upload and publish your episodes to other social media platforms. A few other useful software available are Zoom (usually used for free recordings), Descript, GarageBand (for Mac), and Anchor.

Design a template

Typically, each podcast episode follows a specific structure to promote consistency for listeners. Below are a few key concepts to incorporate into your podcast structure:

  1. Starting a podcast with catchy intro music.
  2. Create an engaging podcast intro that will engage your audience.
  3. Go over the discussion thread for the podcast episode.
  4. Call to action – promote subscription, leave reviews, follow on social media platforms.
  5. End the podcast with catchy music.

To ensure that each episode you create remains consistent, consider creating a template that you can reuse each time you record. This may look different depending on the format of your episode, but in general, expect to at least have your opening and ending music ready for each episode.

Staying consistent with your theme will keep your listener coming back every episode.

Edit

For many, this part can be a little scary and exhausting, but we need to promote how important this step is to keeping your podcast clean and organized.

Using the software mentioned above, such as Cast, you can remove any awkward parts of your episode where you might have paused or said ‘um’; in addition, you can add many other great features like fine tuning the sound or sound effects.

Upload your podcast

Since iTunes and Spotify are the biggest and most popular platforms for podcasts, Bold x Collective wants to talk about how to get your podcast on both platforms.

First, it’s worth mentioning that hosting podcasts on both platforms is completely free; therefore, you can now publish your podcast on both channels instead of limiting it to just one.

For iTunes, you’ll need an Apple ID account to submit your podcast to Apple. To get your podcast listed in the Apple Podcasts app, you’ll also need to create an RSS feed. The RSS feed contains all podcast metadata, such as episode title and description, cover art, and more.

If you don’t have an RSS feed for your podcast, create one easily (for free) using RSS. With your RSS feed created, you are now ready to submit your RSS feed to Podcasts Connect.

Please note that after this process it may take up to 5 business days for iTunes to review your application before it is approved and uploaded; however, you can always check for updates in your Podcasts Connect account.

As for Spotify, you can simply create an account and log into your Spotify account to access Podcasters. Once that’s done, you’ll probably be prompted to click “get started” which will then give you your own link to paste into your RSS feed.

The email address associated with your RSS feed will then receive a verification email from Spotify with a code that you will need to enter in the submission form to activate your account. Once your account is set up, you’ll be able to review your podcast details and make any changes if needed.

Once all the changes have been made, you can upload your podcast to be visible on Spotify within just a few hours!
