WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Former US Senator David Perdue plans to challenge Georgian Governor Brian Kemp in next year’s election, US media reported on Sunday, opening a new Republican rift in the country on the battlefield that gave Democrats the current majority in the US Senate.

Perdue intends to release his announcement in a video Monday and at the same time submit documents for the campaign, Politico and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution report, citing unnamed sources familiar with his plans.

The Republican Party of Georgia was not immediately available for comment.

Reports say Perdue was recruited to run for governor by former President Donald Trump after Kemp refused to help block the November 2020 election results in a country that helped Democrat Joe Biden win the presidency.

Vote activist Stacy Abrams announced on Wednesday that she will run for the Democratic Party’s governor’s nomination in Georgia, which is her second offer for the position.

Trump’s false allegations of widespread election fraud have been blamed for splitting Republicans in Georgia ahead of two second rounds of U.S. Senate elections last January, in which Perdue was defeated by Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff. Former Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler also lost to Democrat Raphael Warnock in the second round.
