A team works better when there are clear roles and responsibilities identified throughout the team and when each role is filled by a person who is highly qualified for that role. This is the basic concept of teamwork, where a collective group can achieve more than if each person works individually. Jobs need to be divided to make this possible, so assigning jobs to people who have the skills to do the job is more efficient than assigning them randomly, or to people who don’t have the skills they need.

When we hire for production teams, in addition to the necessary skills, we look for added culture and value matching. Every new person who joins us adds something or praises our culture. That makes the team unique and unique. If you’re thinking about jumping off a boat (intention words!) Extreme ownership and trust

As a team, and each one individually, we take full responsibility for our work and the things that have happened. This means that everyone takes action to get the necessary information to do their job, and we proactively try to solve every given problem. We do not wait for someone to hand everything over to us, but we search, search and find. And yes, sometimes we fail. In such situations, we do not blame others for failure, but we own it. As one of the values ​​of our company says: “we learn with every trip”.

Professional maturity

Professional maturity is the ability to respect diverse cultural backgrounds and workplace experiences. In our team we have 12 different nationalities from 4 continents and we work in teams distributed between Helsinki, Tallinn and London. We respect each other and accept that we are different – that’s what makes us special. So many different cultures in one team sometimes causes situations where our opinions collide. We approach these situations as a source of true team value, with a non-judgmental and compassionate attitude.

Suitable for the purpose

Being a bunch of experienced people who are really good at what they do means we want to do our job really well. We want to provide the best possible experience for our clients and partners. We want to create products that are as good as they can be – to make them perfect.

The problem with perfectionism, however, is that it slows us down and can make the team miss opportunities to bring value in a new way. If we release things only when they are perfect, we will not learn fast enough how to improve things. Therefore, we try not to get in the way of the better. So we strive for perfection, but don’t let that stop us from publishing great things.

I disagree and dedicate myself

We believe that a good idea can come from anyone. And we want the best ideas to flourish – no matter where they come from. This means being open to working constructively with people with different skills and perspectives, and making our decisions inclusive and rigorous.

Once we have exhausted the options a decision is made. We accept the concept of constructive debate and asking questions, but when a decision is made, we all gather around the chosen path. We embody the principle of disagree & commit.

Belief in making a difference

Many of us joined Starship because we thought it would be cool to work with robots. And it really is. However, the common value we all share is that we truly believe we can make a difference. We believe we can positively impact last mile problem solving by developing a delivery service tomorrow, today. We all want Starship to succeed and the last mile to be the greenest mile.
